I have a non-copy protected ebook on disc, composed of mostly Word text files and some jpeg images. I just want to make a copy of it, burn to disc, before I make additions and corrections. What is the simplest way to do that?

Besides trojans and things that spy on you for information, what is the point of other types of computer viruses? are they created by best buy and circuit city so that my computer will be trashed and i’m forced to buy a new one? How does the virus creator benefit by slowing, or all together stopping my computer?
Basically, i want to know, what’s in it for them? Why do they do it?
