Does downloading free ebooks from different sites online pose any threat as to my computer getting a virus?

I was thinking about downloading, but I don’t want to accidentally pick up a virus with the download. Do ebooks pose a threat in this regard? Has anyone ever had any problems with this? Thanks!

How safe is it to have print outs of cracked versions of ebooks in developed countries?

My friend has cracked versions of ebooks (the books that you usually buy but can also download from internet for free from few sites). He wants to have their print outs. He is planning to take them as reference when he will visit Australia. I want to know whether it is safe for him to have them with him?
Are there chances that the airport authority will check his bags to know what is in there even if they are a few pages?
Will he get punished if they come to know of those print outs?
