do ebooks from amazon only work for kindle?

i’d like to buy some ebooks from amazon, but i have a sony PRS-505. are their ebooks strictly for kindle or compatible with other ereaders?

Yes, Kindle book has its own format and can only be read by Amazon device. There is a very good discussion about this in the last paragraph of this article:

thinking much more about their purchaser. This will be the only way which i obtain books anymore. The costs for new hardback books is actually expensive. That’s not really to also mention the obscene selling prices they demand for paperbacks. Score another triumph for corporate greed.
