I have some old out of date printed material – How can I convert this into an e-book?

There are rather too many pages to scan on my printer scanner – does anybody know a more efficient way of converting a book into an e-book

The most efficient way is to cut the binding off, and run it through a scanner that reads double-sided pages. This, of course, has the disadvantage of destroying the original book. (The SnapScan is probably the cheapest commonly available one, or many copy shops will allow you to use their scanners for somewhat more than they charge for copying.)
The other options include:
Scanning flatbed, 1 page at a time. On the best commercial scanners, the best scanning time you’re likely to get is about 5 pages/minute, and you’ll have to be careful with the first and last sections where the page curve can make it hard to scan.
With the all-in-one print/scan/copy machines, it’s somewhere between an minute and a minute-and-a-half per page; the hardware & software weren’t designed for large scanning projects.
Photographing the pages, and converting from jpgs: shows a great design for a home-made book scanner that uses a V-shaped bed and digital cameras to get the best page image.
