Is it legal to use downloaded ebooks to reference for my projects, assginments etc?

If i download a book in pdf format. is it legal if i use it in my assginments or projects etc. For instance, if the lecturer demands me the hard copy of the book when it is not available in the library.

    Never heard of an instructor asking or a hard copy of anything only references to where you got your material? MOst, if not all, books are available in soft copy now days. However so long as you provide the source I would think you would be ok. Just make sure you stay within the confines of your school policy.
