The Study of Truth
Scientology, literally meaning the study of truth, is a religion shrouded in mystery and confusion. Or is it a colossal worldwide cash scam used to fool people into believing they are achieving ultimate happiness? Scientology is misunderstood and often criticized. The media has given scientology much scrutiny mostly due to the ignorance of the true beliefs of Scientologists.
Scientology was founded in 1954 by Lafayette Ronald Hubbard. Scientology is based off of his best-selling book Dianetics: the Modern Science of Mental Health which was published in 1950 and received several awards. L. Ron Hubbard was born on March 13, 1911 in Tilden, Nebraska. His father was in the Navy so his family moved often. He was schooled by his mother who had gone to college prior to getting married. Hubbard was an excellent student and became a man who excelled in many professions. This is what led him to his research on Dianetics (Parker, James). “Dianetics is the study of what the soul is doing to the mind” (Church of Scientology).

Hubbard believed that man is divided into three separate parts. Each of these parts plays a different role in making up a person.
“The first is the Thetan (from the Greek letter theta meaning “thought” or
“spirit”), which is the individual himself. The second of these parts is the
mind. The thetan uses his mind as a communication and control system
between himself and his environment. The third of these parts is the body”
(Church of Scientology).
The Thetan is essentially our soul. We are a thetan and everything else in our (our body and our mind) are not really a part of us. Our mind acts as a gateway for our thetan to interact with our body. Our body is how we interact with the environment.

Scientologists believe that we are all immortal spiritual beings. They do not believe in a “God”. They believe that there is a creator but there is no dictated way on how they worship him. They believe that as they grow to understand their mind and the reality of the universe their relationship with the creator will strengthen. Other than the creator scientology has no main deities, but one of the most common misconceptions is that they worship a god called Xenu (also sometimes pronounced Xemu). In fact they do not worship Xenu. They **** him.
L. Ron Hubbard believed in “Space Opera”. Space opera is a form of science fiction about space ships, aliens, and futuristic technologies. Hubbard believed that millions of years ago Space Opera was in fact real. According to Hubbard Xenu was an intergalactic overlord who was head of the Galactic Confederation. Xenu controlled over 76 planets that were highly overpopulated. To solve the population problems he used the Galactic Confederation’s army to kidnap people as he lured them in by telling them they were being called in for income tax inspections. He stuffed the kidnapped people into boxes and transported them to Earth (which was known as Teegeeak at the time) in a spaceship and stacked them around the bottom of volcanoes. He dropped hydrogen bombs inside of the volcanoes and then simultaneously detonated the bombs thus killing the billions of people. Supposedly their thetans wander the Earth causing spiritual harm to us (Secret Tapes: The History of Xenu).

Auditing sessions help people determine great areas of spiritual distress and helps them deal with these areas. The “E-Meter!” or ElectroPsychoMeter helps determine the mental state of a person and helps the auditor determine areas of spiritual distress. The auditor asks questions to the person who is hooked up to the E-Meter and then records the machine’s responses. The E-Meter does not harm a person but merely notices the changes in a person’s mental state (Church of Scientology). L. Ron Hubbard did not invent the E-Meter even though his name is on the patent. He actually stole the device from Volney Mathison who was a chiropractor who developed the machine to help his patients (Andres Heldal-Lund). Scientologists will use auditing sessions to solve their problems instead of using medications such as anti-depressants.
“L. Ron Hubbard discovered that drug and chemical residues are stored
and trapped in the fatty tissues of the body and remain long after a person
has been off drugs. As long as this person has these residues in his body,
his awareness, abilities and attitudes can remain suppressed, adversely
affecting his ability to succeed to his full potential in life” (Church of
Scientology).
Scientologists believe that drugs and chemicals cloud our minds. They stop us from being able to think clearly and live happy lives. The religion’s strict anti-drug policy is one reason for the scrutiny in the media. Millions of people take anti-depressants and other medications. Without these medications some of these people would not be able to function properly in society.
According to “Scientology Today”, Scientology gains over 600,000 new su
