Why is it so dark in the creature creator of Spore?

I have downloaded Spore for free and when I go to the creature creator part of the game (where you add parts to the cell and everything) and where there should be the creature and background, its black. When I go to paint it though, I can see everything. I am just tired of guessing in the dark. please help me.
I should also tell you that this is the first time I have ever download a game.
How to play with a creature you’ve made in Creature Creator on Spore?

I’ve bought the game Spore, and I like it, but when I create a creature in the Creature Creator, I want to play the game with it, but how do you do that? Is it even possible to play with a already created creature?
Does SecuRom come from downloading the creature creator of Spore too?
