Why are computer viruses created, how does the creator benefit?

Besides trojans and things that spy on you for information, what is the point of other types of computer viruses? are they created by best buy and circuit city so that my computer will be trashed and i’m forced to buy a new one? How does the virus creator benefit by slowing, or all together stopping my computer?
Basically, i want to know, what’s in it for them? Why do they do it?
