What is the best free ebook creator program?

I have a lot of items saved as word documents and will be getting an e-reader soon. I need to find a free program that will convert word documents to e books for my personal use. Please Help!

What reader are you getting and what formats does it support?
You can convert from Word to PDF by downloading the free Save As PDF app from microsoft.com. You can also download Open Office, use it to open the documents and then save as PDF.
Calibre is a free app that converts between several formats as well.

the best ebook software out there is ebookswriter they have also a free lite edition
by the way it is a full editor so you can write ebooks within the program (the editor is more powerful than word, expecially for links frames etc
